Let's Get Physical With Jess

30 September, 2016

If you missed out on meeting Jess MacPhie at our Grand Opening Celebration or one of our Pilates classes, fret not! Jess is here every Monday at 7:00pm.

This is the first of a two-part Q&A introducing our Pilates instructor, personal trainer and dietitian, Jess to our team. Jess opens up about her own challenges in keeping fit & healthy as well as the benefits she gets out of Pilates.

Get Physical With Jess

How did you get introduced to Pilates?

I started mat Pilates when I was about 12, as complementary activity to all of the ballet/contemporary/jazz I was doing, so I have always enjoyed and seen the merit of it. And over the years I have flitted between mat, reformer and barre, just to keep it interesting!

Do you have to be a dancer or injured to do Pilates?

Pilates is a fantastic complementary activity to dance, and originated as such. You don’t have to have any kind of dance talent to get involved though! And as Pilates can be catered to your fitness level, there can be more of a clinical focus to manage injuries, or it can be more dynamic and suited to those who just want a good workout.

Who is pilates suited to?

Everyone!

If I have an injury can I attend a group Pilates class?

Each exercise in Pilates can be modified to suit any injury, aches or pains.

What’s your best advice for someone new to Pilates?

Body awareness develops over time, so if you keep coming to class and you’ll start to feel less uncoordinated, I promise!

What is your favourite aspect of Pilates?

I love how diverse it can be, from having more of a remedial focus to being a dynamic, sweat inducing workout - all depending on which exercises are used. It incorporates stretching and strengthening, and is so good for spinal mobility and health - what’s not to love?

Jess’ classes start at 7:00pm on Monday nights in the Body and Brain Centre studio with all equipment supplied. We recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early to have a chat to her about any injuries or areas of concern or even have a relax on the mat before the workout begins.

Appointments available in Moonee Ponds or online.
