Why I Stopped Seeing my Physio

As a teenager, I was very active and over time developed knee pain. I went along to the family physiotherapist to get myself out of pain and back into running again. After one year and two different physio clinics, I was still in pain and barely able to run despite taping, religiously doing rehab exercises and attending weekly and sometimes twice-weekly treatments.

By chance, my father met a Chiropractor whilst out on his daily run. Through this chance meeting, they got to talking and he began seeing this chiropractor. After the success my parents had experienced seeing him, they took me along too.

After a short period of time, I was no longer waking up in the night with pain. I was able to run. Subsequently, I also stopped suffering headaches which, without even realising, had become a constant in my life. These results and success cemented the idea that I wanted to become a Chiropractor.

What’s the difference between Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Physiotherapists?

As a Chiropractor, I am asked this question frequently. I am of course biased because of my own personal experience and investment in becoming a Chiropractor.

I have been treated by all three professions and I have learnt a lot from my friends and colleagues who are of part of these varied professions. There are brilliant therapists across all three professions but like any other profession, there are also some duds.

Why have I written this today? Because we are more alike than we are different. Each of these professions aims to help patients and inspire healthier communities. When you injure yourself, it’s best to find a good practitioner, rather than a specific profession, that works best for you.

I have previously read many different spot-the-difference articles that cleverly disguise facts with emotive wording to persuade you toward a particular profession. I have highlighted the differences in green within this objective list to make it easier to identify. No hiding anything here!

A side fact that I discovered whilst researching for this piece; the number of Physiotherapists in Victoria is roughly equal to the total number of Chiropractors and Osteopaths in all of Australia.

How do you pick the right therapist for your injury or condition?

As I’ve demonstrated above, it’s about finding the right practitioner for YOU. It doesn’t matter if your neighbour says that they see the “most fabulous chiropractor”, or that they tried Dr. Y with no results. You are unique and so is your health and your specific injury.
