12 December, 2017

Meditation & Mindfulness for Beginners

Run by meditation teacher Stephanie Cochrane - BPsych(Hons), our four-week course is the ideal place to begin if you are new to meditation and mindfulness or looking to refine and develop your skills.

If 2017 has left you feeling anxious, stressed, overtired, overwhelmed, or habitually overthinking, this course content is structured specifically to equip you with techniques to relax your body, calm your mind and rest deeply. The course also introduces strategies for managing pain and for developing better focus, practices that cultivate positive states of mind such as gratitude, kindness, joy and compassion. Through weekly group classes and achievable home practices, this course seeks to empower participants in developing their own personal mindfulness practice, to deepen self-awareness and increase well-being.

About the course:

Mindfulness, as defined by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn, means “paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgementally”. More and more research is establishing the positive outcomes associated with practising moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations and surrounding environment, with openness and curiosity – for example, reduction in stress, improvements in emotional regulation, concentration etc.

The central objective of our Beginners Mindfulness and Meditation course is to introduce you to mindfulness meditation and help you cultivate a personal mindfulness practice.

We will cover meditations on the breath and body, as well as sounds, movement, repeated phrases/mantras and simple visualisations. We’ll also introduce effective strategies for working with thoughts, emotions and pain and explore a range of mindfulness techniques for everyday use.

Course Content:

In this four-week course, spanning consecutive Tuesdays between 9th and 30th of January 2018, you will be exposed to the basics of mindfulness meditation, as well as current scientific research on mindfulness and the brain, emotion regulation and compassion.

The course is facilitated by our meditation teacher, Steph, who will provide a source of support, information and direct the learning process by answering questions, providing ongoing feedback and synthesising emerging themes.
